A school in the US state of Georgia was cordoned off following reports of a shooting spree.

Apalachee High School in Winder, Barrow County, 25 miles west of Athens, was placed on strict lockdown Wednesday morning, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

The school district confirmed reports of gunfire at the school to Atlanta News First.

Pictures from the crime scene show dozens of ambulances and police vehicles in front of the school.

At least one person was loaded onto a rescue helicopter on a stretcher.

Apalachee High School is one of two high schools in the district and has approximately 1,900 students.

Currently, panicked parents are standing in front of the school and many seem to be in contact with their children.

The district said the students would be released to their parents and guardians.

Live footage shows a student curled up under a cover next to nearby ambulances.

Heavily armed police entered the school as students were being evacuated to the football stadium
