After watching and studying the footage of the Giants’ dismal 28-6 loss to the Vikings in the season opener, coach Brian Daboll said “yes” on Monday when asked if he would stick with Daniel Jones as starting quarterback.
When asked if there were plans to bring in another quarterback to compete with Jones, Daboll answered “no.”
There was another “nope” from Daboll in response to the question of whether there would be a changed approach to give backup Drew Lock or third quarterback Tommy DeVito additional workouts this week.
Jones was miserable in his first appearance since missing last season with a torn ACL, and the poor performance had nothing to do with the injury, which has now fully healed.
Jones was off-target from the start of the game and never found his rhythm. This was one of his most inaccurate performances since joining the Giants as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Jones completed 22 of 42 passes for 186 yards and had two interceptions – one of which was returned 10 yards by linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel for a touchdown.
“I would say the decisions we made, the people we watched, where we threw, were mostly good,” Daboll said. “Obviously there were some, whether it was inaccuracy due to a base or maybe pressure, there are a number of reasons for that.”
The Giants face the Commanders on Sunday at FedEx Field. Jones is 3-1 in his starts in the building and 5-1-1 in his career against the Washington franchise.
