Today on Google it’s all about s’mores.

The latest Google Doodle features the chocolatey, gooey campfire treat. Here’s why.

Why does Google celebrate S’mores?

According to Google, today’s Doodle celebrates the s’more – traditionally made with toasted marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers – because on this day (September 9) in 1925, an article was published that noted the introduction of “some-mores” as a new snack at Camp Andree, a national Girl Scout camp.

The s’more first appeared in a 1920s cookbook, Google reports, where it was called “graham cracker sandwiches.” The treat became popular with Girl Scouts, who called it “some more,” which was shortened to s’mores over the years.

Unfortunately, Ohio residents are not allowed to have a campfire and make s’mores. A severe late summer drought has led to a fire ban in 23 Ohio counties.

When is National S’mores Day 2024?

National S’mores Day was scheduled for August 10, 2024, according to National Today. The website states that the history of how the day came about and why it was placed on August 10 is unknown, but it is celebrated at a time when many go camping or gather around the fire pit.

About half of the marshmallows sold during the summer are roasted over a campfire, according to National Today. Additionally, the website reports that 41% of people surveyed only eat s’mores in the summer, while 20% eat them year-round.

What is a Google Doodle?

Google Doodles occasionally appear on Google’s homepage to draw attention to a historical event, place, or anything else Google deems important.

They’re usually interactive. When users click on the s’mores doodle, they’re taken to an animation of a bear, a squirrel, and a ghost, each bringing a s’mores ingredient to the fire. Google’s Pac-Man doodle lets you play the game.
