Governor Evers hosts annual highway safety conference to prevent accidents and injuries

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The annual Governor’s Conference on Traffic Safety was held this week in the Wisconsin Dells, bringing together experts, stakeholders and community members to discuss measures to prevent fatal crashes and serious injuries.

The conference was hosted by the Bureau of Transportation Safety of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

They covered topics such as law enforcement strategies, accident response and traffic accident management, technical solutions and data analysis.

“Our goal is to bring together ideas from government, advocacy and the private sector to find new ways to improve safety on our roads,” said Governor Evers. “My administration continues to make safety a top priority and supports the work that helps keep our roads and communities safe.”

State Patrol Superintendent Tim Carnahan explained how a safer transportation system will also improve public safety, which he said should be a concern for everyone. In Wisconsin, unsafe driving is a leading cause of accidents.

  • Every year, about 3,000 people are injured by a reckless driver.
  • More than a quarter of all traffic fatalities are caused by driving under the influence of alcohol.
  • About 10,000 accidents per year are caused by inattentive drivers.

This annual conference is one of the ways Governor Evers is trying to increase public safety throughout Wisconsin.
