Geneva County scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to pull away with a 54-12 win at Pleasant Home in a close game between the two schools on Friday night.

Kevin Bond made his debut as head coach of the Eagles, who began the year 0-1 while the Bulldogs started 1-0.

Pleasant Home started its offense from the 34-yard line and quickly got a first down with a 10-yard run by Jacob Bryan on second down. Two plays later, Bryan fought his way through the defense with a 14-yard run to the opposing 37. Geneva County’s defense forced a turnover when Bryan was close to a first down.

The Bulldogs took the lead and committed two consecutive false start penalties. After a stop for insufficient yardage, Brendan Hall took the ball 81 yards into the end zone. The next point failed, making the score 6-0 with 6:40 minutes left in the first quarter.

The Eagles took over at their own 47-yard line and again played seven yards to Bryan. Jack Wiggins had a 5-yard run on third-and-8, setting up a 43-yard run by Bryan. From there, Bryan capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. The two-point attempt was unsuccessful and the game remained tied at 3:45.

Geneva County initially had good field position after a good return before the ball was pushed back to the 28-yard line by consecutive penalties. On the third play, Jamarion Williams found a gap and scored a 45-yard equalizer. Hall converted the two-point conversion and took a 14-6 lead.

Bryan needed just one play, a 58-yard run, to cut the lead on the next possession as Pleasant Home closed to 14-12 late in the first quarter.

Caden Hutchings threw a 23-yard pass to Williams for a first down at the Eagles’ 39. Hall had a 19-yard run on the last play of the stanza. Hall scored on a 19-yard touchdown run with 11:14 left in the first half, increasing the score to 22-12 with the conversion. The Bulldogs forced a three-and-out on defense and regained the lead.

Hall scored a 47-yard touchdown on the first play of the next series. The next point wasn’t good, but it increased the lead to 28-12.

Chris Law started Pleasant Home’s next possession with a 6-yard run. Bryan then made two consecutive first down runs of eight and 12 yards across the halfway line. The defense again held its ground and forced a turnover.

Hutchings went airborne on the first play of the next drive and scored a 48-yard touchdown to Earl Rogers. Rogers then kicked the PAT to give Geneva County a 35-12 lead with 3:42 left before halftime.

When the Eagles started their next drive, Wiggins managed a 7-yard run on the first attempt. Tyler Purifoy moved the chains with his own 7-yard gain and gained 13 yards on four carries. The Bulldogs continued to slow the offense late in the first half.

Rogers opened the second half with a 22-yard touchdown run. The extra point was a real winner and increased the lead to 42-12. After a fumble on the kickoff, Bruce Sconiers got a handoff and ran 47 yards into the end zone on the first play of the next drive. The point after that failed and the score remained 48-12.

Geneva County appeared to capitalize on another turnover, converting an interception into more points, but a holding call prevented another touchdown before Pleasant Home forced its first turnover of the night.

The Eagles were unable to move the ball against the defense and were forced to punt. Hall found a gap at the Bulldogs’ 42-yard line and found the end zone from 58 yards out, extending the lead to 54-12 at the end of the third quarter.

Neither team scored a point in the fourth quarter as the game came to a close. Pleasant Home hopes to win and stays home to face the Fruitdale Pirates (0-0) on Friday, August 30th.
