Grow Out Sale helps local families purchase children’s items

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) – The Jefferson County Fairgrounds were bustling Friday thanks to a Grow Out Sale hosted by a local nonprofit organization.

Hundreds of families spent the morning rummaging through clothes, toys and baby items.

“They should do this more often,” said shopper Roxanne Robinson.

Featuring gently used goods from around 100 consignors, the goal is to put affordable children’s items into the hands of families in the north of the country.

“Our mission is families helping families. We want to bring our families together in the north country and at Fort Drum. They can sell their stuff and they can buy stuff at really great discount prices,” said Jennifer Chapman, who founded The Grow Out Sale.

People started pouring in as soon as the doors opened. Of course, that means things got a little hectic, but for the organizers, it wasn’t too hectic.

“It’s a little scary for a while. When the line gets backed up and we’re trying to get through it, it can be a little daunting, but we always manage. Everyone is friendly. Everyone is understanding and everyone is happy,” said worker Hank Chapman.

Everyone had different plans. Alyssa Durham is expecting twins and they will need some things.

“Today I found a lot of clothes. I found some toys, kitchen sets and things like that for afterward,” she said.

Corinna Smith has found a way to help her little one stay there.

“I bought a sit and play mat for him and a lie-down mat for him,” she said.

This special sale runs through Sunday, after which many of the items will be available at the Rustic Market on Polk Street in Watertown.
