LOS ANGELES – The Guardians designated for assignment veteran right-hander Scott Barlow and re-signed left-hander Anthony Gose on Sunday, a day after Cleveland’s bullpen was forced to cover 7 1/3 innings following a brief appearance by starter Gavin Williams.

Barlow, 31, was acquired from San Diego in November in exchange for right-hander Enyel De Los Santos. In 63 appearances, he posted a record of 3-3 with three saves and a 4.25 ERA with 68 strikeouts in 55 innings.

Manager Stephen Vogt said it’s never fun to give someone news like that, but after Saturday’s game and looking ahead to the week ahead, the club needs to do something. Unfortunately, he said, the baseball business is cruel sometimes.

“We’re devastated,” Vogt said. “Scotty meant so much to us. He’s going to continue to mean a lot to this group. He’s left his mark on this group, as a person, as a pitcher, as a teammate. This is a really, really tough morning for us.”

Barlow was used as a setup man for closer Emmanuel Clase, posting a 3.12 ERA in 43 1/3 innings in 50 appearances through July. Barlow’s August was a struggle, however, as he allowed 10 earned runs in nine innings in 11 appearances. His strikeout rate dropped to 17.9% last month and his walk rate shot up to 10.7%.

Gose has made two appearances for Cleveland, totaling two strikeouts and one walk in 3 1/3 innings while allowing three earned runs on six hits. He returns to the club for the fourth time this season. Cleveland has selected the 34-year-old three times in 2024.

Gose made his debut as a reliever with Cleveland in 2021 after returning to the minor leagues following five seasons as an outfielder with Detroit and Toronto. He underwent Tommy John surgery in September 2022 and spent the entire 2023 season rehabbing.
