Hand baggage rules for liquids at Manchester Airport before the May holidays

Hand baggage rules for liquids at Manchester Airport before the May holidays

Holidaymakers will still have to stick to the 100ml limit for liquids in hand luggage when flying this summer, with Manchester Airport and major airlines urging passengers to follow the current guidelines.

This comes after some airports in the UK introduced new security scanners that eliminated the need to adhere to the 100ml limit. Thanks to 3D scanning technology, passengers no longer need to put liquids in plastic bags or take out laptops and electronic devices.

The government had set 1 June this year as the nominal deadline for the installation of the Next Generation Security Checkpoint (NGSC) scanners at major airports. However, several airports were granted an extension when it became clear that they would not meet the 1 June 2024 deadline. However, they have now been successfully installed at Aberdeen International Airport, as well as Teeside and London City Airport.

Manchester Airport has previously said it continues to make “good progress” with the installation of the scanners, but that they will not be fully rolled out until next year. The scanners are installed in some of the airport’s corridors, but to avoid delays at security checks, all passengers are asked to respect the current restrictions.

Major airlines have also urged their passengers to adhere to the 100ml restriction. A Tui spokesperson said: “Although UK airports are installing new scanners to prepare for changes to security restrictions, you should still adhere to current guidance at this time as not all airports have changed and these restrictions will still apply to your flight home at destination airports. All liquids – including water and creams, lotions, perfumes, hand sanitisers, food and lighters – must only be carried in containers no larger than 100ml.”

EasyJet confirmed that its policy had not changed and that liquids, aerosols and gels should be in containers of 100ml or less to pass through security and that they should all fit into a 20cm x 20cm transparent resealable bag. Ryanair advises passengers to follow the same guidelines.

On its website, Jet2 states: “Please continue to travel as normal and expect security screening to continue as normal unless we tell you otherwise on the day of screening. This means you will only be allowed to take liquids into security screening in containers of 100ml or less that fit into a clear, resealable plastic bag (no larger than 20cm x 20cm). The changes will be phased in at UK airports, so please do not assume that the new security systems are already in place at your departure airport.”
