Heavy rain expected in New Orleans after Labor Day | Weather

After the dry weather on Labor Day, meteorologists are expecting daily rains again and possible flash floods on Wednesday morning.

The heaviest rains are expected on Wednesday, with parts of southern Louisiana likely to see up to 10 centimeters of water per hour.

The New Orleans area is expected to see 3 to 4 inches of rain between Wednesday and Friday, said Megan Williams, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, but that estimate could prove to be an underestimate.

“Depending on where the storm develops, higher amounts could definitely be possible locally,” Williams said.

Meteorologists expect isolated flash floods from around 7 a.m. Wednesday to early Thursday morning.

Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Slidell are at hazard level two out of four, meaning there is a “low” chance of water accumulation in densely populated or low-lying areas, forecasts say.

“It’s more vulnerable,” Williams said of New Orleans, noting that the rains are typical for this time of year. “The water doesn’t drain as quickly.”

Labor Day weather was hot but should be much better, with minimal chance of rain. Temperatures should be in the 90s to 100s.

Tropics Update 02.09.2024

Meteorologists said a disturbance in the Caribbean could intensify as it moves toward the Gulf of Mexico over the next week.

Disturbances in the tropics could intensify

Meteorologists are monitoring a disturbance in the eastern Caribbean that has a 40% chance of developing into a tropical depression over the next week. The tropical wave is producing thunderstorms and strong winds over parts of the Lesser Antilles, Puerto Rico and adjacent waters.

The system could develop further as it moves into the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, said John Cangialosi of the National Hurricane Center.

On the Texas Gulf Coast, an offshore disturbance producing “some disorganized shower activity” is expected to move inland on Tuesday and has little chance of developing into a major storm, meteorologists said.

A tropical wave is producing some showers and thunderstorms off the west coast of Africa and could intensify as it moves west-north or northwestward across the Atlantic Ocean.
