Hello Darkness sells nearly 50,000 copies of the first issue and gets a butt one-per-store variant of issue 3

Article overview

  • “Hello Darkness #1” sells nearly 50,000 copies, leading to numerous reprints by Boom Studios.
  • Issue #3 features a “Butt Variant” cover, making it a rare collector’s item that is only available once in each store.
  • Annie Wu’s SIKTC variant boosts issue #3 pre-orders following Erica Slaughter cover month.
  • Earlier rare variants such as the covers of Jenny Frison, Peach Momoko and Jae Lee achieve high resale prices.

The summer of horror anthologies seems to be getting even hotter. As Bleeding Cool already reported, Hello darkness and Oni Press’s EC Comics Revival penetrated the market with over 120,000 copies of horror content from an impressive list of top-class creators. Although Oni has sworn not to reprint Epitaphs from the Abyss #1, Boom went the other way, race to get more copies on the shelves after a sell-out at dealer level with a second edition that came out last week and again with a third edition that goes on sale next Wednesday, August 28th, along with Hello darkness #2.

So far, the first two editions of Hello darkness sold over 78,000 copies, which means issue #2 sold over 20,000 copies, and there are no ratio variants. And from what I hear, Hello darkness #3 is already selling better than issue #2. This is probably partly due to the fact that it has a SIKTC variant cover of Annie Wu as part of Boom’s Erica Slaughter Cover Month. But now Boom is getting extra cheeky with an unlockable variant of Paul Rivera which is already referred to as the “butt variant”.

Not only does this cover feature a full view of a mysterious woman’s butt hidden behind the branding on the main cover, it is also limited to one copy per store, making it probably one of the rarest. Hello darkness Covers out there. Issue #1 surprise 1-per-store “Thank You” variant of Jenny Frison has sold for $19 and the SDCC exclusive titles are still in high demand with Peach Momoko Glow in the dark version for $100 or moreand several sales of 80-100 $ for the Jae-Lee Foil variant (which ironically is a homage to EC Comics) and $30-40 for the Julia Puebla Diamond foil variantThe question is: How much will people pay for the butt variant?

It might be worth making sure your local comic shop secures their copy before the FOC on Monday, September 2nd.
