In the shadow of illegal wildlife markets, a lesser-known but worrying trade is thriving. The online sale of taxidermy of bats – including the critically endangered Kerivoula picta – is offered as decorative items on platforms such as Etsy, eBay and Amazon. This trade not only violates international conservation laws, but also fuels the decline of species that are vital to our ecosystems.

Kerivoula picta bats, also known as painted woolly bats or fire bats, are colorful and strikingly patterned. Conservationists cite online demand for these bats as one of the main threats to their decline in their natural habitats across Asia. To make matters worse, sellers often deceive consumers with claims of sustainable sourcing.

Despite clear violations of the Lacey Act, which prohibits the trade in illegally captured wildlife, these sales continue, facilitated by large online marketplaces. The situation has escalated to the point where urgent action is needed to prevent these beautiful creatures from being reduced to mere ornaments.

Please sign this petition to call on Etsy, eBay and Amazon to stop the illegal online sale of endangered bats!
