The only known fact is that she gained this ability before Beetlejuice killed her, and that it was in the context of her cult. Unfortunately, since the audience never sees the group, it’s unclear if she’s the only one with this power, or if others also have the ability to drain souls. This mystery adds another layer of intrigue to Delores’ character.

Speaking to Collider, Monica Bellucci described her character as “…full of anger and despair and obsessed with revenge.“This description perfectly describes Delores’ intense anger towards her ex-husband in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. She is the epitome of a spurned woman, followed Betelgeuse through the Neitherworld with one goal – to punish him for killing her. After all, if it weren’t for him, she would still be alive. If her magic worked in the Neitherworld, she could follow Betelgeuse to attain an immortal life instead of being stuck in the afterlife.


A second possible explanation for Delores stalking her ex-husband all this time Beetlejuice 2 lies in the titular ghost’s voiceover statements during the flashback. Betelgeuse explained that she could gain immortality if she took the ghost’s life and soul. He never clarifies if this would only work for Delores during her life.
