Here are shops in the Milwaukee area that offer locally made bratwurst

With summer ending in less than a month and a half, there’s still time to throw some good brats and sausages on the grill. This isn’t an exhaustive list, but here are a few butcher shops and delis in the Milwaukee area where you can find locally made brats.

Sausage Haus Meat & Deli – Oconomowoc

To: According to its website, The Sausage Haus Meat & Deli is owned by Al and Lana Jerabek. A GMToday article states that the business has been based in Oconomowoc for over 30 years.

Hours: Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Held’s Meat Market – Slinger

To: Held’s Meat Market was opened in 1886 by Adam Held and has been passed down for four generations, according to its website. Held’s had four locations before the current building opened in 1995.

Hours: Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Held’s Meat Market is closed on Sundays and major holidays.

House of Homemade Sausage – Germantown

To: The House of Home Made Sausage has been around since 1939, although the business has moved over the years. According to the website, it is a fourth-generation, family-owned butcher shop.

Hours: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Note: The store is temporarily closed but is scheduled to reopen at 10 a.m. on August 22, according to the company’s voicemail.

West Bend Sausage Plus – West Bend

To: West Bend Sausage Plus offers a variety of meats and cuts that have won awards at the Wisconsin Specialty Meat Championships and the American Cured Meat Championships for the past three years. According to the company’s website, they also smoke shanks, pork knuckles and pig ears for dog owners to take home for their furry friends.

Schwai’s Meat & Sausage – Fredonia

To: Schwai’s Meat & Sausage is operated by Tom Schwai, and their Facebook page shows that the business participates in local events such as Strawberry Fest and Wine & Harvest Fest in Cedarburg, as well as the West Bend Farmers Market.

Karl’s Country Market – Menomonee Falls

To: Karl’s Country Market has been in business since 1965, according to its website. The website also states that the store has won over 150 international, national and state awards for its European-style sausages over the past 30 years.

Becher Meats – West Allis

To: South Milwaukee Sausage & Meats, also known as SMx2, opened in 2020 after a group of friends came together and became co-owners of the shop. They’ve been making their products in small batches ever since. Head butcher Michael “Doc” Donnell has been in the industry for nearly 20 years, according to the shop’s website.

Hours: Wednesday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Butcher Block Meat Market, LLC – Oak Creek

To: Butcher Block Meat Market opened in 1981. In addition to the usual meats, Butcher Block Meat Market also offers seafood, fish smoking, game processing and catering, according to its website.

Hours: Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The market is closed on all major holidays.
