Here’s what we know about the family’s rented car in the fatal Belle Glade crash

WPTV is still searching for answers about the rental car driven during the fatal crash in Belle Glade that killed nine people on August 5. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, the family rented a 2023 Ford Explorer.

The Ford website states that the 2023 Explorer model eight different recalls.

One of the recalls concerns a possibly missing or incorrectly tightened strut bolt, which could increase the risk of accidents if a steering due to changes in steering resistance and traction. This recall was issued by Ford in February 2024.

We spoke to family members of the victims who said the car was rented from Payless Car Rental in West Palm Beach, near the airport. WPTV reporter Ethan Stein requested comment from Avis Budget Group, the parent company of Payless Car Rental, and is still waiting for a response.

A spokesman for Payless Car Rental saidThey are cooperating with officials while the investigation is ongoing, but did not answer our question as to whether the car was up to date with all recalls.

“We were deeply saddened to learn of this tragic accident and extend our deepest condolences to the families affected,” said Payless. “…We are unable to provide any further comment at this time.”

The Crash report stated that none of the ten people in the vehicle used “safety equipment.”
