Home recordings show the moments that led to Ashley Smylie’s death

RANKIN COUNTY, Mississippi (WLBT) – A heartbreaking video was shown in court Tuesday showing the moments leading up to the death of a Northwest Rankin High School teacher.

Ashley Smylie was killed in March of this year and her daughter Carly Gregg is currently on trial for her death.

The footage comes from a video hanging in the family kitchen and shows Carly seemingly entering the same room as her mother.

You hear a shot, followed by a scream. Then two more shots.

Carly is then seen walking back into the kitchen, where she appears to be texting someone on her cell phone.

Gregg is charged with premeditated murder, attempted murder and tampering with evidence.

The second day of Carly’s trial began with two minor witnesses. The media was not allowed to make audio or video recordings of them because they are minors.

However, a WLBT journalist in the courtroom said both teens testified about what Carly did after the alleged crimes occurred.

The first teen says Carly called her the day Ashley Smylie was killed.

When the friend arrived at Carly’s house, she said she asked her: “Have you ever seen a dead body? My mother is in there.”

She then testified that Carly told her that three more injections were waiting for her stepfather, Heath Smylie.

After Carly allegedly shot Heath, both the girlfriend and Carly ran to a nearby house.

The second juvenile witness testified that Carly contacted him after the shooting but asked for help.

The prosecution called additional witnesses to the stand throughout the day, including Heath Smylie, who, according to the defense, stands firmly on Carly’s side.
