House in Bel Air razed to the ground after apparent explosion, at least 1 person killed

At least one person is dead and another is missing after an apparent explosion leveled a home in Bel Air, fire officials said Sunday.

Officers were initially called to a gas leak at about 6:45 a.m. in the area of ​​2300 Arthurs Woods Drive and were informed of the explosion at a home en route, said Deputy State Fire Marshal Oliver Alkire.

One person was found dead, another was injured and not treated. Another person is missing, said Andrew Doyle, a spokesman for the Harford County Fire and Emergency Services.

Alkire said a BGE contractor was on site at the time of the explosion.

The fire department said there was no further danger to the population.

A photo released by county authorities shows several firefighters at the rubble of a house, with another destroyed house visible in the background. Charred pieces of wood were lying around the property, insulation material and wood splinters were lying on the street.

According to official information, the house was for sale. In online real estate ads, the more than 5,000-square-foot house is offered for $824,900.

Rescue workers searched the rubble with special equipment.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office and Baltimore Gas and Electric are currently conducting an investigation, officials said in a post on X.
