Houston, we have a problem

Houston, we have a problem

The Chicago Bears have a lot of work ahead of them.

Let’s hand out some instant notes.

attack

QB Caleb Williams | C+

I’m not even mad about Williams’ interceptions. What was he supposed to do? He has no help. The line is awful, the plays are awful, the personnel is awful; everything was awful around the rookie tonight. For all the talk about the incredible situation Williams was put in, it looked nowhere near as advertised. When Williams had time to bring structure, he was pretty damn good tonight. Even when he didn’t, he wasn’t bad.

RB D’Andre Swift | D

Money well spent… not.

WR DJ Moore | ON

Ten targets, six catches and nearly nine yards per reception. DJ did his job despite not being used properly tonight against a Houston defense with glaring weaknesses against the long ball.

WR Rom Odunze | A

Despite a strained medial ligament, the rookie was on the field all night.

TE Cole Kmet | B

It was nice to see Shane Waldron remembering Cole Kmet playing on that team.

Gerald Everett | F

Have you ever had a colleague who you didn’t know what he had to offer, but who was still liked by his superiors? That’s Gerald Everett.

Offensive Line | F

This group has serious problems that need to be fixed quickly. To steal a joke from Matt Rooney, at some point we have to consider Nate Davis pulling a “Costanza” and trying to get fired.

defense

Defence line | A

Sacks, pressures, and everything in between. What was once considered a glaring weakness for the Bears, this unit has held up well and then some through the first two games of the season.

Linebacker | A

The tackling in the open field continues to be incredibly impressive. Chicago has two professional and reliable linebackers, so it’s a nice throwback to the days of Urlacher and Briggs. Sanborn has also been an excellent transition player for the Bears when he’s been on the field.

Secondary | A

It wasn’t perfect, but this unit held up against one of the best passing attacks in football and made excellent adjustments as the game went on.

Special teams

K Cairo Santos | A

Perfect night, perfect note.

P Tory Taylor | A

Another great night for the rookie punter tonight in Houston.

Coaching

Matt Eberflus |

It’s bad enough to be 0-2 in tackles, but the two tackles Eberflus lost were brutally bad decisions. One of them, Eberflus, was right on the play – an unforgivable way to lose two timeouts. He would have gotten an F if he hadn’t called plays on defense.

Shane Waldron | F

If there was a lower grade, Luke Getsy would have gotten it tonight. His plays were abysmal. (Yes… I did that on purpose)

Eric Washington | EIN

How could I complain about Washington when their defense played so well against a top-10 offensive unit?
