Gasoline prices have been falling nationwide for two weeks and remain below their average level from last year.

“As long as we can avoid a major hurricane threatening refineries in the Gulf region, I believe the declines could continue this week and the national average may drop to its lowest level of the summer,” GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan said in a statement on Monday.

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East threaten to reverse these trends as the US plans to increase its military presence in the region. The US and its allies expect Iran to retaliate against Israel following the assassination of Hamas politician Ismail Haniyeh.
