Gasoline prices fell slightly on average this week, 37 cents lower than the same time last year.

U.S. oil production hit a new high, according to a GasBuddy analysis of Energy Information Administration data. Refinery utilization in the Midwest also rose this week, suggesting lower prices may be ahead for drivers in Illinois and surrounding states.

Gas prices in the region have risen since an ExxonMobil refinery was forced to shut down several weeks ago due to a power outage during a storm. Exxon announced this week that the plant was resuming operations.

However, analysts continue to caution that the forecast for the rest of the year is vague due to rising tensions in the Middle East and that further price spikes could occur if the conflict escalates.
