The average price of a tank of gasoline is about 6 cents lower this week than last week. Factors that could drive up the price of gasoline – including destructive hurricanes, major conflicts in the Middle East and refinery outages – have largely failed to materialize.

The Midwest saw the biggest price increase at the pump due to some refinery outages. Those problems have largely resolved, and gasoline prices in states like Illinois are falling from last month’s levels, when motorists were paying about $4 a gallon, 50 cents more than the national average at the time.

According to the gas price tracking app GasBuddy, thousands of gas stations across the country now sell gas for under $3 a gallon.

“It seems fitting that the national average has fallen for four weeks in a row to its lowest level since February in the run-up to Labor Day, giving Americans one last chance to hit the road without gasoline prices playing such a big role,” GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan said in a statement Monday.

Stacker compiled statistics on gas prices in the Yuma, Arizona metropolitan area using data from AAA. Gas prices are current as of August 26.
