While the moon is in the Earth’s shadow, it gets much darker,” Dr. Benjamin Boe, a lunar eclipse expert and assistant professor of physics at the Wentworth Institute of Technology, tells TODAY.com.

During partial eclipses, the three planetary bodies are not perfectly aligned. So, as the moon passes through Earth’s umbra, it does not take on the reddish hue of a total lunar eclipse, according to NASA. Instead, a shadow appears to fall on the moon.

Boe says this eclipse will not be particularly dramatic.

“This lunar eclipse will only be a partial one, where a small part of the moon will go dark and take on this red color. The rest of the moon will be partially eclipsed, so it will be fainter, but not too dramatic. As far as lunar eclipses go, this one is very minor,” he says.

“If you’ve seen a lunar eclipse before, it won’t be anything special. If you’ve never seen one, it could still be a treat to watch.”
