Michigan’s crucial November election: Key races, how to vote
The November election in Michigan will be crucial, with important races for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives at stake. Here’s how to vote and make sure your voice is heard.
Are you registered to vote?
Today is National Voter Registration Day, a nonpartisan holiday aimed at increasing voter turnout.
“We are pleased that all major voting associations are supporting this holiday to build confidence in the voting process and help more Americans register to vote in this record-breaking year,” said Steve Simon, Minnesota Secretary of State and co-chair of the holiday steering committee.
Since its launch in 2012, organizers say they have helped more than five million American voters register.
Polls in Michigan show the presidential race to be particularly exciting, and other races, including local ones, are also on the ballot.
When is the voter registration deadline in Michigan?
Some states have voter registration deadlines, but in Michigan you can still register up until Election Day. However, to avoid delays, it’s a good idea to register early.
Who is eligible to vote in Michigan?
To be eligible to vote in Michigan, you must:
- A US citizen
- You must have been a resident of Michigan for at least 30 days at the time of your election.
- Be at least 17.5 years old and 18 years old on election day
- Not currently serving a prison or jail sentence
How do I register to vote in Michigan?
Registration can be done online, by mail or in person at your local clerk or branch of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Election dates and deadlines in Michigan
- Voter registration deadline: In person by November 5 (election day), October 21 by mail.
- Deadline for requesting postal voting documents: 1 Nov, 5:00 pm
- Early voting deadline for the parliamentary elections: 26 Oct – 3 Nov
- Period for personal postal voting: 26 September – 4 November.
- Election day: November 5th.
