How to set up email notifications for national park reservations

How to set up email notifications for national park reservations

Thanks to a newly introduced email notification system, it is now easier to get a reservation at a national park.

Through recreation.gov, the ticket and reservation site for parks and campgrounds, visitors can set up “availability alerts” to be notified by email when someone else cancels their reservation and an entry time becomes available.

The feature is especially helpful because reservation parks like Yosemite often sell out as soon as tickets are released.

“Remember that setting up an alert does not guarantee a reservation. Alerts simply let you know when a campsite becomes available that meets your criteria,” Recreation.gov said on social media.

There are forty different locations that offer availability alerts, including:

  • Private horse reservations in Bryce Canyon National Park
  • Vehicle Reservations in Glacier National Park
  • Tours and programs in Joshua Tree National Park
  • Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge Entrance Ticket
  • Timed tickets for Lava River Cave
  • Mesa Verde National Park Tours
  • Tours in White Sands National Park
  • Entrance ticket to Yosemite National Park

The service can also be used to gain access to popular exhibitions such as the National Archives, the Pearl Harbor National Memorial Tour or the USS Arizona Memorial. Another example: weekend tickets for the National Archives are often sold out. The availability alert can inform interested visitors about tickets becoming available.

Leisure and outdoor fans were excited about the latest release, with some calling it “the best feature ever!”

“We recently set up alerts for campgrounds in the June Lake Loop and it worked great! When we were notified, we acted quickly and got 6 nights,” one social media user commented on Instagram.
