After the third season of Emily in ParisCostume designer Marylin Fitoussi teased to ELLE.com that it might finally be time for Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) to “embrace French culture a little”—both in her wardrobe and in her personal life. “This young American woman says, ‘Oh, the high-waisted pants with the wide legs… (can) I take them and do them in my own style?'” Now, with season four streaming in two parts on Netflix, Fitoussi’s vision is taking shape.
In Season 4, Emily still struts around the City of Lights in neon colors and dangerously high heels, but she also opts for trousers, button-downs and blazers that reflect a more “mature” French sensibility. “She has a lot more control, maybe a lot more power,” Fitoussi recently said Fashion fan“I think what will define the new season is this masculine-feminine twist that we’ve never had before.”
This new aesthetic, although not absolutely more subdued, suits an older, more confident Emily. And it’s perfectly in line with this year’s fashion trends: Corporate-core, gender-neutral and academic-influenced styles all appear in Em’s reinvented wardrobe. Now, don’t expect Emily to start wearing all black in Paris due to peer pressure. Perhaps nothing characterizes Fitoussi’s creations better than color, and Collins’ wardrobe in Season 4 is no exception.
One of Em’s first looks is this highlighter yellow ensemble, consisting of a leather shirt by Possery over a ruffled blouse by Joli Closet and a corduroy mini skirt by Isabel Marant. Never one to skip accessories, Emily carries a Silvia Tcherassi bag and her diamond necklace to tie everything together. But my favorite detail of this look may be the gold ponytail cuff that keeps Emily’s hair in place.
