WINTER PARK, Colorado – Human remains were found in a wooded area near Mary Jane Road in Winter Park on Saturday and authorities are now working to identify the person.

On Saturday, a man called police to report that he had found a suspected human skull in a densely wooded area between Highway 40 and Mary Jane Road in Winter Park, according to a Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) news release. The man stated that he had been collecting mushrooms in the area.

Officers from the Fraser Winter Park Police Department, the U.S. Forest Service, the Grand County Coroner’s Office and the CBI arrived at the scene. They recovered the skull and several other bones that were lying nearby.

Grand County Search and Rescue officials conducted a more extensive search of the area but found no additional bones.

Officers found no clothing or identifying information. They will hand over the remains to a forensic anthropologist who will try to determine the person’s gender, race and approximate age, as well as the possible time of death, the CBI said.

Further details were not immediately available, but the CBI said evidence suggested the remains had been there “for a considerable period of time and possibly many years”.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the CBI hotline at 720-295-6642 and indicate that it is about the human remains case. All callers can remain anonymous.
