A SHOCKING gasoline price has caused people to rethink their transportation habits.

A gas station that offers entry-level unleaded gasoline at $8.56 a gallon has sparked controversy over the price, but the owners are denying it.

In California’s dusty Mojave Desert, a gas station posted prices that customers found outrageous, according to a now-viral X-post by Matt Bateman (@mbateman).

Several people spoke out on social media against prices that are more than double the national average.

“I would rather walk,” said a Tesla driver.

“You would be better off crossing the state line and looking for the first gas station you find on the Nevada side,” another driver added.

Across the United States, average drivers are paying significantly less for gasoline.

According to AAA, the average price of gasoline in the United States is $3.37 per gallon.

However, according to the post, the station said it had to raise prices due to its remote location.

There are laminated signs in the window of the gas station pointing out the exorbitant prices.

They also tell drivers not to complain to staff about the price.

“Our overhead costs are extremely high,” explains the laminated sign.

“Delivery costs double at this location. There is a vast desert of almost 100 miles with no service.”

Drivers who want to use rarer fuels would have to pay even more, the post said.

Mid-range gasoline costs $8.66, while premium gasoline has risen to $8.76 per gallon.

The petrol station management also stressed that the station is a small, family-run business and advised angry motorists to buy their fuel elsewhere.

Several commentators on X praised the channel’s transparency and said the high price is part of the American economy.

“The beauty of the free market and price signals is that gasoline can be delivered to the middle of the desert,” said one commentator.

“I’ve been to a place like this before and I’d rather pay the list price than be stuck in the middle of nowhere,” added another driver.

Gas prices have been rising again since 2021 after falling sharply during the first Covid lockdowns.

Increased consumer travel, geopolitical tensions with oil-producing countries and state-specific tax increases have depleted excess supplies and driven up gasoline prices for years.

However, inflation has cooled significantly since its peak in 2023.

Currently, the average price of gasoline in California is the highest in the United States. Drivers have to fill up for $4.59 per gallon.

Only Hawaii surpasses California prices with an average of $4.66 per gallon.

Oklahoma has the lowest average gasoline prices, with drivers across the state paying over $2.94 per gallon.
