Illinois Governor JB Pritzker said in an interview Monday that Vice President Kamala Harris must be cautious before a debate with former President Trump.

“I don’t think anyone should underestimate Donald Trump,” Pritzker told CNN’s Sara Sidner. “He’s won some debates. Certainly people would say he won the debate against President Biden a few months ago.”

On September 10, a debate between Trump and Harris moderated by ABC News will take place.

“We saw him win the debate against Hillary Clinton the first time he ran,” Pritzker said of Trump. “He is not to be underestimated.”

Pritzker said that while Harris is a “great personality with great talent” and communication skills, that may not be enough to defeat Trump.

“We should not think that Kamala Harris can win a debate better than Donald Trump,” Pritzker said. “They will emerge as serious rivals with very, very different viewpoints.”

“I think it’s going to be important for Kamala Harris to get those points across and make sure she doesn’t let Donald Trump get to her,” the governor added.

Harris’ team specifically pushed for a change in the rules governing microphones during the debate scheduled for September 10, thereby backtracking on previous agreements to mute microphones during the opposing candidate’s speaking time.

The Harris team still refuses to sign the already agreed rules for the upcoming debate, which were originally based on the guidelines for the CNN debate in June between former President Trump and President Biden.

“The memo sent by ABC is a draft set of rules that both campaigns must sign and signal their agreement to. We did not do that because we think both candidates have expressed a clear desire for hot mics. It is not clear why Trump’s staff would overrule their director, who should be able to make up his own mind,” said Harris spokesman Brian Fallon. wrote in an X-Post on Thursday.
