Impact of cyberattack on Sea-Tac Airport continues for fourth day

Impact of cyberattack on Sea-Tac Airport continues for fourth day

On Saturday, the Port of Seattle noticed “nefarious characters” in its system, causing web system outages and delays at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Because Labor Day is expected to bring high levels of travel, the incident has now continued for four days.

Here are the impacts passengers and staff are still dealing with on August 27.

Checked baggage vs. hand baggage

First, international travelers must factor even more time into their plans. Baggage check-in at airports has become complicated, so officials there are encouraging travelers to bring carry-on luggage if possible.

While it is important to take hand luggage with you on international flights, airport staff advise doing the same for domestic trips.

As FOX 13 reported yesterday, the cyberattack also affected the airport’s baggage handling system, which is located 10 miles of conveyor belts.

Access to Sea-Tac Airport services

Because the Port of Seattle computers are down, there is no Wi-Fi, no Lost and Found, no wait time displays at checkpoints, and no SEA Visitor Pass services.

The airport’s main website is also unavailable, but travelers can use the Port of Seattle’s updates page in the meantime.

The good news? TSA’s checkpoints run on their own network and were not affected by the cyberattack. Although their process is working properly, agency members warn of wait times due to other affected services around the airport.

A sticky note on a leaflet reads: "The port computers are down. The check-in process is taking longer than usual. We apologize and thank you for your understanding."

How early should you arrive for your flight?

Those travelling to the airport are advised to two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before any international flight. If you’re flying on Spirit, Frontier, Sun Country, JetBlue or international airlines, airport officials recommend building even more time into your travel schedule.

The exact timeline for the full restoration of web service is still unclear, but in the meantime the airport has a team of helpers in green vests who allow passengers to move freely and assist them with any questions.

Late Tuesday morning, Sea-Tac officials said they were making progress in restoring online infrastructure, but they continued to advise passengers to allow extra time when departing from the airport.
