For the purposes of the city rankings reports, the terms “dangerous” and “safest” specifically refer to crime rates calculated using FBI crime data—no other characterization of a community is implied or intended. We calculated per capita crime rates for 44 states that provided complete data to the FBI. Here’s a look at how crime rates have trended across the U.S. Violent crime rates remained stable or decreased in 66% of states. Fifteen states saw a year-over-year increase in violent crime. Property crime rates remained stable or decreased in 64% of states—despite a nationwide increase. 16 states saw an increase in property crime rates. Nine states saw both violent and property crime rates increase year-over-year.
