Indianapolis is set to receive $15 million from a federal grant program to build more electric vehicle charging stations in its neighborhoods.

The grant, announced Wednesday by U.S. Rep. Andre Carson and Mayor Joe Hogsett, will be used to build charging stations in underserved parts of the city. The federal funds come from a grant program created by President Joe Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure bill in 2021.

The $15 million coming to Indianapolis is being provided by the Federal Highway Administration and will be used specifically to build electric vehicle charging stations in areas that critics say were overlooked in the Indiana Department of Transportation’s electric vehicle infrastructure plan, according to a news release from Carson and Hogsett’s offices.

Indiana’s plan was approved in 2022, but racial justice groups criticized it at the time for failing to provide access to charging stations to communities of color, particularly Black neighborhoods. In 2022, Carson, who represents most of Marion County in Congress, wrote to U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg expressing concerns that Indiana’s plan failed to “provide connections to communities left behind.”

The charging stations will be placed locally and Indianapolis residents will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the locations, the press release said.

In a statement, Hogsett said Indianapolis looks forward to bringing electric vehicle technology to neighborhoods “most affected by environmental injustice.”
