If there’s one thing college students love, it’s convenience. If you’re looking for something tasty to eat after finals or a place to go on a first date, Ichiban Japanese Restaurant is the place to go. The restaurant is within walking distance of UAA, and students on campus can ride public transportation for cheap.

Ichiban is a restaurant serving Japanese cuisine located in a strip mall at the intersection of Tudor Road and Lake Otis Parkway, focusing primarily on sushi and other Japanese dishes. Ichiban also offers a selection of sake and beers in addition to its food menu.

Strangers are greeted by hospitable staff in a warm atmosphere at Ichiban, where you are treated like a regular and made to feel at home – an experience that seems to be lost in many modern restaurants. The dining room is filled with the subtle sounds of jazz instruments that accompany the ambient noises of the kitchen crew and guests at their tables.

The atmosphere feels intimate and more akin to traditional Japanese restaurants, in stark contrast to restaurants that prefer a more direct concept. Aside from the small umbrellas hanging from the ceiling and the koi fish, this restaurant does not conform to the stereotypes that usually accompany Japanese restaurants in the US.

As you would expect, Ichiban offers a variety of sushi rolls and appetizers. The menu offers a wide variety that is sure to please everyone. If customers are risk-taking and willing to experiment, head sushi chef Yao can prepare the chef’s specialty upon request, which is either not on the menu or is something he creates on the fly.

No matter what you order, you’re guaranteed to find something you like. The bravest diners should order the Goldmine Roll, extra spicy. This roll is not for the faint of heart, and the staff will warn you that this roll is extremely spicy.

For diners who don’t feel comfortable with spicy food, Ichiban’s menu offers plenty of other options. The chicken katsu main course, for example, with its crispy golden breading and served with rice, is an excellent take on this classic Japanese dish.

Many restaurants in the United States do not have a particularly hygienic environment. Ichiban stands out from these restaurants by providing a clean and well-maintained environment from the kitchen to the restrooms. Considering that you will be served raw fish when you order it, a clean environment is a must.

Not only is Ichiban the perfect setting for celebrations of all kinds, it also offers a quiet and intimate atmosphere for a first date. The staff is friendly rather than pushy, and for the most part you won’t be bothered by other guests.

Before paying, be sure to ask your waiter to place an order of Tempura Oreos for the table. Served under a pillow of whipped cream, the deep-fried cookies have a warm filling inside. It’s a great way to cap off your visit to this tiny restaurant.

This is your sign to pay Ichiban and Chef Yao a visit – no matter what the occasion. Whether it’s a celebration or a date: if you’re willing to spend a little more than at McDonalds, you’ll be treated to great food in a friendly atmosphere.
