Ipswich’s Sam Morsy scores in injury time to frustrate Southampton | Premier League

Sam Morsy scored a dramatic equaliser in injury time and Ipswich secured a 1-1 Premier League draw with fellow promoted side Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium.

The Saints could have claimed their first win of the season in the top division after the first career goal from 18-year-old academy graduate Tyler Dibling, but the visitors’ captain Morsy equalised five minutes after the 90th minute with a deflected shot from the edge of the box.

Both teams are yet to win a league game this season, having played five games each since being promoted from the Sky Bet Championship.

Southampton striker Cameron Archer wasted two golden chances, including a shot that hit the post, to give the hosts some breathing room, while goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale made brilliant saves to prevent Omari Hutchinson and George Hirst from equalising before the final twist.

Ipswich arrived at Hampshire on the back of two consecutive draws and a double win over Southampton in League Two last season. Manchester City loanee Kalvin Phillips was replaced by Jens Cajuste in midfield due to a thigh injury, while the Saints’ four changes included Adam Lallana making his first league appearance of the season. Lallana quickly justified his selection by setting up a teammate half his age in wonderful fashion.

The 36-year-old tore open the visitors’ defense with an exquisite through ball, allowing the young Dibling to touch the ball a few times and shoot it past Arijanet Muric into the goal with a joyful strike.

Despite the early setback, Ipswich were initially more dangerous. Sammie Szmodics missed a half-volley and later missed a free-kick from close range, albeit from an offside position.

Southampton survived further moments of tension but could have extended their lead in the 27th minute. Ipswich appealed in vain for a foul on Liam Delap, Archer was set free by Dibling and, after fending off Jacob Greaves and Dara O’Shea, rounded goalkeeper Muric only to direct the ball onto the left post.

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna, who dismissed pre-match suggestions that the game would be a six-pointer, was surely frustrated to be trailing at half-time. Saints keeper Ramsdale saved from Leif Davis and O’Shea before making a spectacular save to deny Hutchinson’s powerful shot in injury time.

Archer, who was responsible for a crucial penalty miss in last weekend’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester United, failed to capitalise on another excellent chance early in the second half when, after once again evading O’Shea and Greaves, he aimed straight at Muric.
Town struggled to regain the attacking strength of the first half.

Substitute Jack Taylor triggered a mass brawl with a poorly timed tackle during a bad-tempered phase, thereby disrupting the rhythm of the game.

McKenna’s side looked to be returning to Suffolk empty-handed after Ramsdale tipped substitute Hirst’s header over the bar, but from the resulting corner, the partially cleared ball fell to Morsy and his shot flew into the top left corner after a powerful touch from Joe Aribo.
