Is gas station water dangerous?

Is gas station water dangerous?

In a now viral TikTok, a woman urged viewers not to buy crates of water left out in the sun and warned about the pollution caused by plastic.

In a video with over 239,000 views, TikToker Kaylee (@kayleeest) shows a stack of water cases outside a 7-Eleven gas station. A sign reads: “$6.99 water, 24-pack.”

“Maybe I’m crazy, but I hope no one buys this water,” she says. “The reason is that the sun shines on this plastic all day. Don’t drink water that’s outside.”

The headline reads: “Do you drink a lot of plastic?”

Is drinking from heated plastic dangerous?

According to the investigation, Kaylee is on to something.

When plastic water bottles are heated, chemicals such as antimony and bisphenol A (BPA) can leach into the drink.

These plastic chemicals can have serious health consequences if consumed in large quantities. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, antimony is a carcinogen, meaning it can cause cancer.

BPA can have harmful health effects in children – and according to the Mayo Clinic, there may even be a link between BPA and type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Will viewers stop drinking from plastic water bottles?

In the comments section, users added to Kaylee’s advice and discussed the consequences of plastic contact.

“True, they say you shouldn’t drink old water from the car. Watch out for the bubbles. It makes you sick,” said one commenter.

“Maybe I’m crazier, but I never buy anything consumed that’s outside. I have no specific reason for this, but it just feels weird to me,” wrote another.

“I don’t drink bottled water,” a third viewer shared. “I have a 1/2 gallon metal water bottle that I fill twice a day with my Microclustered Water from my sink.”

Others, however, do not seem to care about the potential consequences of plastic consumption.

“When I was a kid, we spent all summer drinking from a three-year-old garden hose with rust on the end, and yet here I am 59 years later,” wrote one.

“You do realize that these pallets of water are being transported in truck trailers with temperatures exceeding 38 degrees, right?” asked another.

“The plastic is already in the water. Hot or cold, it doesn’t matter,” added a third.

Others are more annoyed by the price of the water containers in the clip, joking that $6.99 is too expensive.

“Damn, the price alone is dangerous to buy, hahaha,” joked one viewer.
