Is there a threat of a ban on gasoline-powered ATVs/UTVs in New York State?

Fall is upon us and many people are returning to the woods or hiking trails on their ATVs/UTVs. But is New York State planning to ban the gas-powered vehicles?

Summer is quickly coming to an end. However, the remnants of Hurricane Debby left behind a lot of mud and water, and some are seeing this as an opportunity to have some fun! Riding through the mud on an ATV, side-by-side or dirt bike is so exciting!

There have been rumors that New York’s plans to become more environmentally friendly and less dependent on fossil fuels would mean the end of gasoline-powered SUVs, and there may be some truth to those rumors.

A new law requires that ATVs and other off-road vehicles must be powered by electricity (batteries) and not gasoline!

According to a report by Spectrum News, the law states that…
The bill is sponsored by Senator Pete Harckham (and Assemblyman Kevin Cahill, A.4302). It also requires all off-road vehicles and equipment sold or leased in New York to be zero-emissions by 2035. Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles have an additional 10 years to comply—their deadline is 2045. And finally, the bill directs the state to develop a comprehensive plan to manage the transition to an all-electric transportation sector.

Many off-road vehicle or ATV manufacturers have also started making and designing electric powered machines. I have seen many outdoor and hunting shows using these. Not only are they better for odor control since no fumes are produced, but they are super quiet. The performance is still there in many cases. But so is the price.
