The Islamic Resistance in Iraq announced early Thursday morning that it had used a drone to attack a power plant in the city of Haifa in the pre-1948 Palestinian territories.

In a statement, the group said: “We continue our approach of opposing the occupation, supporting our people in Gaza and responding to the massacres committed by the usurping power against Palestinian civilians, including children, women and the elderly. To this end, the Iraqi resistance attacked an occupation power plant with a drone.”

The group stated that the drone attack targeted the Alon Tavor power plant in Haifa. The attack occurred on Thursday morning, August 29, 2024, according to their statement.

The group reiterated “its commitment to ongoing operations against enemy positions,” expressed solidarity with the people of Gaza and condemned the attacks on Palestinian civilians. They concluded their statement with a verse from the Holy Quran: “Victory is from Allah, for He is Almighty and Wise.”

Israeli authorities have not yet confirmed the attack.

Iraqi groups allied with Iran said they had carried out several attacks on Israeli targets and on US military bases in Iraq and Syria under the name “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” in retaliation for the Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip.

The US responded with air strikes on the bases of these Iraqi groups, which caused numerous casualties. Some of the air strikes are said to have been carried out by Israel.

The US currently maintains around 900 troops in Syria and 2,500 in Iraq as part of its efforts to combat the Islamic State (ISIS). IS once controlled significant territory in both countries before being pushed back by local forces with international support.

Meanwhile, in the occupied West Bank, at least 10 Palestinians were killed today in what is being described as the largest Israeli assault on the occupied territory since the Second Intifada over two decades ago. Israeli jets bombed West Bank towns and ground troops moved in late Tuesday and early Wednesday, concentrating mainly on the northern areas and particularly targeting Tulkarem and Jenin.

Violent riots also broke out in Tubas and Nablus. According to health authorities, at least 15 people were injured.

Since October 7, Israel’s military campaign has killed at least 40,534 Palestinians, and thousands more are believed to be buried under rubble. The sustained military assault has rendered large parts of the area uninhabitable and exacerbated a humanitarian crisis marked by rising hunger and disease.
