Itasca County Board holds hearing on short-term rental ordinance

GRAND RAPIDS – The Itasca County Board will hold a public hearing on its short-term rental ordinance at its meeting on Wednesday, August 14.

The board held a hearing on the first draft of the ordinance in April and faced opposition to a provision that would have exempted units rented for six days or less from the county’s licensing requirement.

The amended regulation does not include the controversial exemption, which the panel said was intended to avoid overlap with licensing by the Department of Health. The current draft regulation reduces licensing fees for applicants who already hold a state license from $450 to $100.

The new version also removes temporary licensing for units without compliant septic systems and no longer prohibits the use of mobile homes, tents, fish houses or similar structures. The changes address other complaints from the previous hearing.

If the board adopts the new version of the ordinance, all existing short-term rental units will have to be licensed by January 1, 2026. New units will need a license before they can begin operating.
