James Cook’s three-touchdown home run is the highlight of the Bills’ victory over the Dolphins on Thursday

Although the goal-line hit was probably No. 3 on the highlight list, it could be the most influential going forward. With just four rushing TDs in his first 34 games, Cook hasn’t gotten many goal-line runs. That could change.

“It seems like he’s getting more confident and more secure every week,” Allen said. “He was begging for some goal line runs and we gave them to him and he scored his touchdown down there.”

The 24-year-old Cook believes he has earned the trust of offensive coordinator Joe Brady and Co. in close-range situations and beamed about his success after the game.

“As you saw today, if they trust me, I will get the ball in the end zone,” Cook said.

Overall, the game was a reminder that the up-and-coming running back is versatile, as he rushed for 78 yards on just 11 carries, averaging 7.1 yards per carry, and scored one catch for a touchdown.

Cook has flourished since Brady took over last season and is quickly becoming not only a complement to Allen, but also a focal point of the offense.

As impressive as his 2023 season was, in which he rushed for 1,122 yards, Cook continues his ascent, according to his coach.

“James just continues to grow and get better,” McDermott said.

For Cook, the performance was all the more important because it came in Miami, where he grew up but struggled as a professional. In his previous two away games against the Fins, Cook had a total of just 13 carries for 32 yards. Then came Thursday and a home game with three touchdowns.

“He’s from here and I know it was important for him to play well,” McDermott said. “He’s just growing and developing. I’m just incredibly proud of him.”
