JD Vance has embarrassing interaction with donut shop employees

Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance was apparently hoping for a nice moment on camera when he visited a doughnut shop in Georgia on Thursday, but the whole thing was incredibly embarrassing.

After an employee at Holt’s Sweet Shop in Valdosta asked not to be filmed, the Ohio senator introduced himself.

“I’m JD Vance. I’m running for vice president. Good to see you,” Vance said.

“OK,” the employee replied.

Vance then tried to make small talk with the store’s employees by asking them how long they had worked there. When they answered “since early July” and “almost two years,” Vance replied, “OK, fine.”

He then picked out the doughnuts he wanted, including “lots of glazed ones” and “some with sprinkles,” as well as cinnamon rolls.

“Just what makes sense,” he said.

He also asked someone in the store: “How long has this store been there?”

When the person answered him at age four, Vance said, “OK.”

Social media users commented on the awkward moment, calling Vance “weird” and saying he was “completely incapable of having a normal relationship with another human being.”

This is not Vance’s first slip-up in what should have been a normal interaction. Earlier this month, a reporter in Michigan told Vance he was sometimes perceived as “too serious” and “a little angry” and asked him what made him happy and what made him smile. Instead of giving an appropriate response, Vance lashed out at the reporter.

“I have to smile at a lot of things, including the wrong questions from the media, man,” he said. “If you watch any of my speeches, you’ll see that I’m really having a good time here and enjoying the whole thing.”
