Jeff Bezos has no plans to make an offer to sell the Celtics (report)

Earlier this week, there was a lot of excitement about the impending sale of the Celtics. Bill Simmons of The Ringer revealed on his podcast that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos might be interested in buying the franchise.

But as it turns out, Bezos doesn’t seem to be in the running for the reigning champion’s title. There is “no truth” to the rumors surrounding Bezos and the Celtics, according to The Information. The Celtics’ ownership group announced earlier this summer that it was putting the organization up for sale as bidders lined up for the most successful franchise in NBA history.

Bezos, who is worth around $200 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, hasn’t necessarily been a potential buyer. He was recently reportedly interested in buying the NFL’s Washington Commanders, but ultimately didn’t buy the team. Still, it doesn’t sound like Bezos is in the running for the C’s.

It was rumored that the Celtics would ask for a price of around $6 billion if they sold, which Simmons also mentioned in his podcast.

“The league wants $6 billion for the Celtics,” Simmons said. “They don’t own their arena. That’s a crazy price, but they’ll probably get it. That’s that. They want the $6 billion because they want expansion teams in Seattle and Vegas. They want $6 billion for each of the two franchises for expansion, which would mean a $400 million check for all 30 NBA owners.”

Although the news that the Celtics are for sale is relatively new, the bidding process is expected to be completed during the upcoming 2024-25 season. The team has hired two banks, JPMorgan and BDT & MSD Partners, as advisors for the upcoming negotiations.

Some names have already surfaced, including Celtics minority owner Stephen Pagliuca, who is interested in buying the team. Celtics majority owner Wyc Grousbeck’s group is currently offering 51% of the team for sale, with the rest to be completed in 2028. Changes are coming at the Celtics, it’s just unclear at this point what they will look like.
