Jeff Bezos may be worth 6 billion, but he once paid 0,000 a month in rent to a legendary musician – Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN)

Jeff Bezos may be the second richest person in the world, but in 2023 he chose to pay rent rather than live in his own home.

The unique story revolved around the legendary musician and saxophonist Kenny G and even included payments to the spouse and a temporary restraining order on the home.

What happened: In 2023, Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchezrented a home in Malibu, California, owned by musician Kenny G, for $600,000 a month while they waited for the completion of their new home in Florida, which they planned to move into in 2024.

The Malibu estate, which Kenny G bought for $12.5 million in 1998, features a 5,400-square-foot main house, a 3,400-square-foot guest house built in 2006, a tennis court, a recording studio and access to Little Dume Beach.

The lease did not include furniture, so Kenny G’s belongings were put in storage while Bezos and Sanchez decorated the house with their own belongings. During this time, Bezos and Sanchez also took possession of their $500 million yacht.

The situation became complicated in early 2024 when Kenny G’s ex-wife, Lyndie Bensonclaimed he violated their divorce agreement by renting the house instead of selling it, The Daily Mail reported. She demanded a share of the rental income, but a judgement issued a temporary restraining order preventing her from forcing the sale of the house.

In addition, Kenny G failed in his attempt to stop paying Benson $40,000 a month in spousal support after Bezos’ rental income became known.

Did you know?

Why it is important: The fact that Bezos, who is worth $186 billion, rented a house for such a high amount ($600,000 a month, $7.2 million a year) confused the public. After all, his real estate portfolio includes houses in Hawaii, New York, Texas, Washington DC and Washington and is worth around $500 million.

Adding the $25 million annual operating costs of Bezos’ superyacht would result in additional expenses of $32.7 million in 2023.

Malibu, on the other hand, is a market for the super-rich: increased demand and limited supply make it more difficult to purchase property in the city.

Jay Z And Beyonce paid $200 million in cash for a house in Malibu, making it the most expensive home purchase ever in the state of California.
