Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett was unable to get anything done on offense against the Jets on Thursday and his time as a starter may already be over.

Drake Maye, selected No. 3 overall, made his NFL debut in garbage time of the Jets’ 24-3 victory and is now in line to take over.

New England’s Jerod Mayo was noncommittal about keeping Brissett as the starter after falling to 1-2.

“I don’t know,” coach Mayo told reporters when asked about a possible change. “We talk about it every week … we’ll sit down as a coaching staff.”

Maye looked solid in the cleanup for New England, fighting his way to an eleven-yard first down and getting the Patriots into the red zone before time expired.

However, Maye suffered two sacks on his only drive, including one on the final play, and was hit throughout the drive.

Amazon Prime commentator Al Michaels said Maye received a “welcome to the league” punch on his third play when he was taken down after a one-yard run.

“I thought this was too good an opportunity for him to go out and get some experience,” Mayo said, according to Mass Live.

Mayo had previously refused to name a starter ahead of Week 1, telling reporters that Maye had outclassed Brissett in the battle for the job out of training camp, but gave the veteran the starting spot anyway.

“What I’m saying is this is a real competition … and I would say Drake has outperformed Jacoby at this point,” Mayo said before naming Brissett the starter to begin the season.

The problems on the offensive line are obviously a concern and could influence when the Patriots ultimately decide to make future changes.

Patriots quarterbacks have been sacked 11 times in three games this season, including seven on Thursday night.

However, Brissett did not exactly shine as a starter, finishing in the bottom five in average yards per pass attempt (5.1) and scoring only 13 points per game (third worst).
