Jessica Pegula beats number 1 Swiatek and advances to the US Open

Buffalo native Jessica Pegula will play in her first Grand Slam semifinal on Thursday after beating No. 1 Iga Swiatek in straight sets at the US Open on Wednesday.

Pegula – ranked sixth in the world – is yet to drop a set in the tournament ahead of her semifinal match against Karolina Muchova on Thursday, September 5.

“On Wednesday evening, the relief was palpable when Jessica Pegula finally reached a Grand Slam semifinal at the seventh attempt,” says the preview of Day 11 of the US Open. “The confident 6:2, 6:4 victory against world number one Iga Swiatek said it all: Pegula is in top form in these two weeks and will be almost unstoppable.”

If she wins Thursday’s match, she will face No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka or No. 13 Emma Navarro in Saturday’s final at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

What you should know: Will the blocking of some channels on DirecTV impact the Bills vs. Cardinals viewing experience?

DirecTV customers may not have access to games

For 11 million DirecTV subscribers, many channels were cut off on Sunday as the current five-year deal between DirecTV and Disney, which calls for Disney content to be broadcast on DirecTV’s satellite and streaming services, including U-Verse TV, ended on Sunday, September 1. Talks stalled and DirecTV shut down all Disney channels.

Without a new contract, DirecTV viewers could miss ESPN’s coverage of the U.S. Open tennis, which culminates this week.

“The US Open tennis tournament will be streamed live on ESPN+,” a DirecTV spokesperson said Tuesday. “Disney typically streams the same action live on ESPN.com and its ESPN app, but Disney has blocked that access as well. The company is in the process of removing access to its network-specific websites and apps for all consumers in an effort to drive more consumers to its streaming video services, such as ESPN+, Disney+ and Hulu.”
