Jets’ Aaron Rodgers tells the funny backstory behind Breece Hall’s spectacular touchdown catch in the win over the Titans

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — In a single play, Aaron Rodgers and Breece Hall showed the entire NFL just how dangerous the Jets offense can be. Hall looked like a wide receiver when Rodgers found him for a 26-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, giving the Jets their first second-half lead of the young season.

And it was probably the most spectacular highlight of Sunday’s 24-17 win over the Titans, which brought the Jets back to 1-1.

But the way it all came together was, let’s just say, pretty unconventional.

“I’ll tell you exactly how it unfolded,” a grinning Rodgers said after the game. “I blew the clock and we called a timeout, and Breece came over and said, ‘Hey, throw me a go ball if there’s a backer out there.’ I said, ‘OK.’ And that’s basically how it went down.”

Rodgers was clearly alluding to the lack of planning that led to the game’s most beautiful touchdown, but it should also provide comfort to Jets fans who have suffered through years of a weak offense with no reason for hope.

The Jets and Rodgers weren’t at their best on Sunday, with Rodgers completing 18 of 30 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns – his fifth-fewest yards ever on at least 30 passing attempts. The Jets missed several opportunities to take control of the game before the fourth quarter, including having to settle for a field goal after taking control following a turnover at the Titans’ 30-yard line.

But unlike in previous years, the Jets have overcome their difficulties and made it to the end zone several times – like in the loss to San Francisco on Monday night.

And Hall said that even as the team struggled to move the ball consistently, he noticed things they could improve or add in real time. And that includes Hall’s long touchdown catch in the third quarter.

Hall said this play was made possible by something Hall noticed earlier in the game when he was on the field with rookie runner Braelon Allen (something we didn’t see in Week 1).

“We had a play earlier in the game, Braelon and I were both on it, and I need to know some things about the receivers as well in case Aaron wants to hurry up and get the ball,” Hall said. “So he told me to go out there, and I had a route and I was faster than the linebacker, but he didn’t see me. … He was looking across the field.”

Later in the game, the Jets were faced with the same package, and as Rodgers was giving instructions during the timeout, Hall spoke up.

“I said, ‘Okay, if you don’t like the look, then (change it) like this and let me in.’ And he looked me in the eye and said, ‘All right.’ With a guy like him, the most important thing is to gain his trust because I always tell him, ‘If I’m out there against a linebacker, throw me the ball. … So it’s cool to be on the same page and have him give me that trust to get the ball.'”

That mix of intelligence and talent — not just from Rodgers, but from players like Hall and receiver Garrett Wilson — makes the Jets a major threat every time they take the field. Rodgers and Hall proved that when Hall lined up for the touchdown in the third quarter.

“He jumped out there,” Rodgers said. “(The Titans) let the (line)backer out there and I dropped back and looked inside for a second and when I looked (back) at (Hall), he was 3 or 4 yards behind him. I didn’t exactly throw the best ball, but nice catch nonetheless.”

It was a spectacular catch and the kind of play that turned a near-horrific loss – like we’ve seen so many times from the Jets – into an important win.
