New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson and running back Breece Hall did not believe that their team’s 32-19 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football.

Wilson admitted that the Jets were “not ready yet” and that the 49ers “kicked their asses today.”

“They kicked our asses today, that’s the reality. We have to find a way to improve. The big teams will recover from this and that’s what we intend to do.”

Hall struck a similar tone when he said San Francisco “simply played harder than us” and was an example of the level New York must reach.

To say that Monday’s game was a reality check for the Jets is a bit of an exaggeration, as many doubted their championship chances. They were ranked 13th in Bleacher Report’s NFL rankings at the start of Week 1.

More than anything else, New York’s performance has largely reinforced existing concerns.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed 13 of 21 passes for 167 yards, one touchdown and one interception in his first start since tearing his Achilles tendon.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini took a closer look at the numbers.

“On passes of 10 yards or less, he completed just five of 12 for 46 yards and an interception (excluding planned blocks),” Cimini wrote. “He finished the day with a 10.7% completion rate below expectations, his worst mark since 2021 – the third of his four MVP seasons.”

The offense was on the field for just 21:20 minutes after finishing 25th in time of possession in 2023. Turnovers were another theme that carried over from last year, as Hall lost a fumble in addition to Rodgers’ interception.

The biggest surprise for the Jets was an unpleasant one. Their defense, which was one of the best in the NFL last season, allowed 401 yards and allowed San Francisco’s backup running back to regularly pick the unit apart. Jordan Mason managed 147 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

There’s no reason to panic after just one game, but New York clearly has some weaknesses to iron out if it wants to achieve the goals it originally set when it signed Rodgers last summer.
