Jordan Chiles must return Olympic bronze medal; USA appeals court decision

American gymnast Jordanian chilis Her bronze medal in floor exercise was revoked and she must return the equipment following the ruling of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). the investigation declared invalid As a result, she jumped from fifth to third place. US Olympic officials plan to appeal the court ruling.

On Saturday, CAS ruled that US coach Cecile Landi’s appeal to increase Chiles’ score, which vaulted the 23-year-old into third place, by 0.1 point was outside the one-minute window allowed by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). In its ruling, CAS wrote that the original order at the finish should be restored, meaning Romania’s Ana Barbosu would replace Chiles as bronze medalist. Her teammate Sabrina Maneca-Voinea would finish fourth and Chiles fifth.

Late Saturday evening, FIG announced that it would respect the court’s decision and promote Barosu to third place.

On Sunday, the International Olympic Committee asked Chile to return the bronze medal, saying it would be reallocated to Barbosu.

“We firmly believe that Jordan rightly deserved the bronze medal and that there were critical errors in both the original scoring by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the subsequent CAS appeal process that must be corrected,” the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) said in a statement.

The IOC said in a statement that it was in contact with the USOPC regarding the return of Chile’s bronze medal and would work with the Romanian Olympic Committee to discuss a re-awarding ceremony in Barbosu’s honor.

“The first error occurred in FIG’s evaluation and the second error occurred during the appeal process at CAS, where the USOPC was not given sufficient time or notice to effectively challenge the decision,” the USOPC said in a statement released on Sunday.

It was unclear what the exact process for the appeal would be. The two possible bodies to which the USOPC could appeal would be Switzerland’s highest court, the Swiss Tribunal, or the European Court of Human Rights.

In a separate statement later on Sunday, USA Gymnastics The federation said it had officially submitted a letter and video evidence to CAS showing that Landis’ request for an investigation was submitted 47 seconds after Chiles’ result was published, “within the one-minute time limit prescribed by FIG rule.”

USA Gymnastics said the “time-stamped” video was not available to them prior to the tribunal’s decision and “therefore, USAG had no opportunity to submit it beforehand.”

The rapid turn of events adds another dimension to the difficult days for all three athletes.

Chiles hinted at the decision in an Instagram story on Saturday, saying she was heartbroken and would “take this time and step away from social media for mental health reasons, thank you.”

Jazmin Chiles, Jordan’s sister, said on Instagram that Chiles was not stripped of a medal “because she wasn’t good enough. But because the judges didn’t make it difficult for her and forced an investigation.”

His U.S. teammates supported Chiles, a two-time Olympian.

“Sending you so much love, Jordan,” American star Simone Biles posted on Instagram. “Cheer up, ‘Olympic champion,’ we love you.”

Biles won the silver medal in the floor exercise final, while Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade took gold.

“All this talk about the athlete, what about the judges?” added six-time Olympic medalist Sunisa Lee on Instagram. “Totally unacceptable, this is horrific and I am devastated for Jordan.”

USA Gymnastics said in a statement on Saturday that it was “devastated” by the verdict.

“The request regarding the difficulty level of Jordan Chiles’ floor exercise routine was submitted in good faith and, in our opinion, complies with FIG rules to ensure accurate scoring,” the organization wrote.

Barbosu and Maneca-Voinea remained outside the medal ranks in Floor final on Monday after finishing with a score of 13.700. Barbosu thought she had won bronze against Maneca-Voinea by a tiebreak – a higher execution score – and began celebrating with a Romanian flag.

Chiles was the last athlete to compete and initially received a score of 13.666, which put her in fifth place just behind Maneca-Voinea. Landi requested a review of her score and after a review, the judges added 0.1 to Chiles’ total score. That was enough to overtake Barbosu and Maneca-Voinea and claim the final spot on the podium.

“It was a surreal moment… I saw the score change and I just thought, ‘What’s going on? Is this real? Is this happening?’ I was just really happy in that moment and obviously happy for the other athletes too,” Chiles told CBS Mornings on Friday about the event.

Chiles also won a Gold medal in the women’s team finalwho are finishing their “redemption tour” after the team won silver in Tokyo. But this is not the end of her gymnastics career. She plans to return to University of California and compete for the Bruins.
