Jordan Chiles reacts after invalid appeal threatens bronze medal

Jordanian chilis is taking a break from the public eye as she potentially loses her Olympic bronze medal. The gymnast announced her intention to retire from social media after a court appeal dealt a devastating blow to her floor exercise victory.

Summary of events in the floor exercise competition between the USA and Romania

On Saturday (August 10), the Court of Arbitration (CAS) declared an appeal filed by US coach Celile Landi on Monday (August 5) invalid.

Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade won the gold medal and Simone Biles won the silver. Romania’s Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea tied for third place with a score of 13.700, according to AP. Judges initially placed Ana in third place, followed by Sabrina and Chiles, who performed last in the lineup and took fifth place with a score of 13.666.

One minute and four seconds after the judges announced the final score, coach Landi filed an appeal. Ana was in the middle of celebrating with her Romanian flag. But coach Landi argued that Chiles should have a 0.1 added to her score. After review, the judges agreed and increased Chiles’ score, placing her ahead of Ana and Sabrina.

On Saturday, the CAS ruled that the original order of winners should be restored. The decision was based on a time constraint. Coach Landi had one minute to lodge her appeal under the rules of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). She was four seconds late, which technically made the appeal invalid.

According to AP, Romanian Olympic Committee President Mihai Covaliu wrote a letter of protest to the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) asking it to reconsider Sabrina Maneca-Voinea’s score, claiming that an initial appeal was rejected. Judges deducted a 0.1 from Sabrina for allegedly stepping out of bounds, a decision that was invalid based on video footage.

Ultimately, the CAS leaves the decision on Jordan Chiles’ bronze medal to the FIG, which told the Associated Press that the announcement would be made “in due course.”

Note that the Romanian Olympic Committee, in its appeal against the US coach’s appointment, had demanded three bronze medals – one for Ana, Sabrina and Jordan. Nevertheless, the country’s Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said Saturday’s decision was “Justice … was done.” “In the end, truth prevailed,” Ciolacu reportedly added that earlier this week he had threatened to boycott the closing ceremony because the Romanian gymnast had finished fourth and fifth, calling it a “scandalous situation.”

Meanwhile, Jordan seems to be Chile’s heartbroken over the possibility of losing her bronze medal. On Saturday (August 10), she shared an Instagram Story post with four red broken heart emojis. A second post included the message: “I am taking this time to withdraw from social media for the sake of my mental health. Thank you You.”

Her sister Jazmine also blamed “racism” for the CAS’s new decision on social media. She asked for “prayers” for Jordan and her family.

“Racism is real, it exists, it is alive and well. Five days later, they officially stripped her of one of her medals. Not because she didn’t win, not because she was drugged, not because she left the premises; not because she wasn’t good enough. But because the judges didn’t see the need to give her a hard time and forced an investigation. FOUR SECONDS. Her bronze medal was stripped away because of four seconds, which never should have happened if the judges had done their job,” Jazmine Chiles wrote in her Instagram story.

After returning to Romania, Ana Barbosu told reporters that her problem was not with Chile, but with the judges.

“I just want everyone to be fair. We don’t want to start bullying other athletes of any nationality. We as athletes don’t deserve this. We just want to perform at our best and be rewarded according to our performance. The problem is with the judges, with their calculations and decisions,” Ana said amid social media users who sharply criticized Jordan Chiles’ bronze medal win.

The verdict and the question of what will happen to Jordan Chiles’ bronze medal have clouded a historic moment in which three black women swept the entire podium in gymnastics.
