Josh Allen comes one step closer to NFL history with his outstanding performance against the Cardinals

While it may be too early to call Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen’s resume “Hall of Fame worthy,” he took an important step in the right direction after moving a step closer to history in Sunday’s narrow 34-28 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

Allen recovered from his fumble on the Bills’ first drive of the game and took Buffalo’s offense on his back with two passing touchdowns and two rushing scores. He distributed the ball among his receivers and made several impressive plays with his legs, totaling 271 yards in the win.

The most important statistic that puts him in history is his four total touchdowns, which puts him in second place with Dan Marino and Peyton Manning on the list of players with the most touchdowns in their first seven seasons with 225 touchdowns. Only Patrick Mahomes has scored more touchdowns with 231 touchdowns in his first seven years.

An important note here: Mahomes only appeared in one game in his debut season and did not score a single touchdown. This means that his 231 points were actually scored over the course of six seasons.

What makes Allen a sure-fire candidate for the record is his ability as a runner. Mahomes can power through and use his legs to score touchdowns on the ground, but Allen is a whole different caliber. Allen’s 6’5″ and 230-pound frame makes him a logistical nightmare for defenses, as he can overrun defenders when necessary.

That record will be a statistic to watch all season long, but if last season is any indication of what may come, Allen will finish his seventh season well ahead of Mahomes. He is the only player in NFL history to total over 40 touchdowns in four consecutive years; another six probably won’t be too tall a task.
