Josh Allen’s Thursday Night Football record explained: How the Bills star performed in prime-time games

Josh Allen has been a consistent winner in Buffalo, even though his performance has not yet translated into major playoff success.

The Bills quarterback has led his team to a win in every regular season since becoming a full-time starter in 2019. Thanks to Allen, Buffalo has been a contender for the AFC title every year.

Allen and the Bills have also tended to play particularly well in their Thursday games. In Week 2 of the 2024 season, Buffalo will play its seventh Thursday game with Allen at quarterback against Miami.

Here’s a look at Allen’s record in Thursday games, along with his overall stats and notable matchups in those games ahead of Bills vs. Dolphins in Week 2.

Josh Allen’s Thursday Night Football record

Allen has a perfect 6-0 record in Thursday games so far in his career, with three of those wins coming in a standard Thursday Night Football matchup and the others coming in Thanksgiving games.

In those six wins, Allen was the same quarterback he always was – an efficient and dynamic passer and runner, but one who made a few turnovers along the way.

Allen threw 14 touchdowns and six interceptions in Thursday’s games. Here’s a look at his overall stats in those matchups:

statistics In total
Record 6:0
Comp. % 73.2%
Passing Yards 1,588
Touchdowns happen 14
INTs 6
Yards/Attempt 8.0
Passer Rating 107.5

The Bills hope their success against the Dolphins continues in Week 2, but the gap between the two teams has narrowed over time.

Miami nearly snatched the AFC East crown from Buffalo last season, with both teams finishing 11-6. But the tiebreaker went in the Bills’ favor after they picked up two wins over the Dolphins in the regular season.

Ahead of his upcoming prime-time appearance, we look back at some of Allen’s most notable performances during his six-win streak on Thursday.

Week 13, 2019: Bills vs. Cowboys

In his debut on Thursday, which also fell on Thanksgiving, Allen led the Bills to a 26-15 victory over the Cowboys.

Dallas, quarterbacked by Dak Prescott, took an early 7-0 lead on a Jason Witten touchdown, but from there the Bills took control. Allen threw a touchdown to wide receiver Cole Beasley and later scored a touchdown to seal the win.

Allen finished the game with 231 yards, a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown in his first NFL win on a Thursday.

Week 12, 2021: Bills vs. Saints

This was Allen’s second appearance in a Thursday game, also a Thanksgiving game, and it might be his best overall.

Buffalo dominated New Orleans 31-6, with Allen throwing four touchdowns. Two of his four scores went to TE Dawson Knox, while WR Stefon Diggs and RB Matt Breida also found the end zone.

The game was not close and Allen’s final stats also included 260 passing yards and 43 rushing yards.

Week 8, 2023: Bills vs. Buccaneers

Allen’s last Thursday Night Football game – the others were in September and December 2022 – was last season. The game was against Tampa Bay, a later playoff team, and ended by one point.

Buffalo won 24-18, with Allen totaling two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. Add in his 324 yards in the air and 41 yards on the ground, and it was a strong performance from the quarterback.

With the win, Allen’s record in Thursday games is now 6-0, but that record will soon be put to the test again against the Dolphins.
