Judge killed, sheriff arrested in courthouse shooting

LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT/WKYT) – UPDATE (5:38 p.m.) – The Mountain Eagle reports that Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines is accused of shooting District Judge Kevin Mullins in his office.

Governor Andy Beshear released a statement on X confirming the same news: “Sadly, I was informed that a district judge in Letcher County was shot and killed in his office this afternoon. There is far too much violence in this world and I pray there is a path to a better future.”

Attorney General Russell Coleman released a statement on X saying, “Following the fatal shooting in Letcher County, our office will be working with Jackie Steele, the United States Attorney for the 27th Judicial District, as special prosecutor in this case. We will fully investigate the case and seek justice.”

UPDATE (4:44 p.m.) – Our sister station WKYT has confirmed through the coroner that one person died in the shooting.

ORIGINAL STORY: Kentucky State Police confirmed that a shooting occurred outside the Letcher County Courthouse.

Details are not yet known. The police said the situation was under control and there was no danger to the population.
