Korea’s Jun Woong-tae missed out on winning his second Olympic medal after finishing sixth with 1,526 points in the men’s pentathlon final at the Paris Olympics on Saturday, while compatriot Seo Chang-wan finished seventh with 1,520 points.

Five events were held at the Palace of Versailles in France – horse riding, fencing, swimming, pistol shooting and cross country. Three athletes with the highest total scores in all five events won medals.

Jun scored 287 points in riding, 241 in fencing, 312 in swimming and 686 in laser running – consisting of pistol shooting and cross-country running – for 1526. Seo scored 286 points in riding, 229 in fencing, 307 in swimming and 698 points in laser running for 1520.

A medal from either of them would have been Korea’s second Olympic medal in the modern pentathlon after Jun’s bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Ahmed Elgendy of Egypt won a gold medal with a world record score of 1,555 points. Sato Taishu of Japan took silver with 1,542, while Giorgio Malan of Italy took bronze with 1,536 points.

Korea still has a chance of a medal in the sport, as Kim Sun-woo and reigning world champion Seong Seung-min have qualified for the women’s pentathlon final, which begins on Sunday, the last day of the Olympics.
